I sometimes wonder if an attraction to the fantastic is a form of avoidance or escapism, rather than one of imagination, speculation and a sense of wonder. I have always loved these genres, despite their limited emetional insight as well as the their increasing ubiquity and commercialism. I do hope that the path of popular culture is not one of innovation and transgression pursued through to exploitation and conservatism.
